Nor did I blame "the right" for the Catholic Church's behavior. I blamed authoritarianism, which is what makes makes many Catholic organizations feel at home on the right. It's a different animal.

I do think you're close on the "sanctity" issue, but I also think part of it is the changing definition of marriage. If marriage becomes recognized as a matter of love and partnership instead of the authority of the male "head of household" over women and children, suddenly, those marriages that make people so unhappy don't look so sanctifed, do they?Stephanie Zvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15182490110208080002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38764987.post-75012967359324145142011-04-04T08:29:49.090-05:002011-04-04T08:29:49.090-05:00I think it's kind of a stretch to suggest that...I think it's kind of a stretch to suggest that the "right" is responsible for the abuse in the Catholic Church and elsewhere. In any event, the right is hardly a monolithic group, any more than the "left" is.

Having said that, I sometimes wonder if the anxiety about the "sanctity of marriage" is actually fueled by the high divorce rates in some of the more conservative "red states". If so, it's highly misdirected - the fact that gays can marry in Massachusetts is certainly not contributing to divorce rates in Kentucky or Wyoming.RPS77https://www.blogger.com/profile/14698390366612218268noreply@blogger.com
