It's a horrible tragic story, made all the worse because of the clarity of that letter.
Having grown up in a religious family, I've frequently had to struggle with a theist morality, which always seems so confident in its superiority that any act of aggression or twisted argument can be justified as long as it's targeted at a group considered 'the immoral' - believers in different supernatural beings or those who doubt or disbelieve.
I've tried to explain to my parents that blind loyalty to family and religion (one's own pack) is mafia morality, something wolves are almost capable of feeling.
But I write mostly because I think you do such a great job of short-circuiting the right-wrong, good-evil dynamic. I wish those who prefer to see the world in black and white would read what you write and recognize that human suffering is the same, even if it's felt by someone on the 'other side.'
Thanks for writing this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38764987.post-432177249566407432011-01-09T11:23:21.567-06:002011-01-09T11:23:21.567-06:00Thank you both.

I am bone tired of problems that hurt real people being reduced to yes/no, good/evil rhetoric. Hell, we can't even call child rape what it is, which puts us that much further from solving the problem.Stephanie Zvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15182490110208080002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38764987.post-40235420676510386062011-01-08T11:34:08.272-06:002011-01-08T11:34:08.272-06:00There is little else that needs to be added to thi...There is little else that needs to be added to this discussion after that post, Stephanie.
I'd like to think that reading a letter like that would prevent the religious and non-religious from kicking around pedophilia and/or rape as a rhetorical football to score points against their opposition. Such a heartbreaking letter from someone so tortured that they took their own life should be enough to get the two sides to work together to end such abuse.
Too bad that just isn't the case.sinned34https://www.blogger.com/profile/03995070458330162319noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38764987.post-75765610048285554742011-01-07T08:54:28.473-06:002011-01-07T08:54:28.473-06:00Stephanie,

What a horrible and heart-wrenching story, but one that needs to be shared.
This post could have stood alone without the juxtaposition with Jason's issue, yet I hope that Greg-Peter or someone reading his post finds yours and connects the dots.
It really makes my post on the issue seem petty and childish.
OLPW, they call you, and you deserve it.
So I don't need to double post I would also like to say that your perspective in the Assange case is necessary and needed, I hope you don't quit for exasperation.George W.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14508653029767613480noreply@blogger.com
